There will eventually come a time in your life where the idea of owning a property will manifest. Not only can this be an exciting thing to think about, but it can actually be done on your own accord. Most people believe that they’d have to move into an existing house to start a living.
However, if you have the time and resources, building your own home can be a worthwhile endeavour. Since this will be a space that you will be living in, you should hire custom home builders for expert help. These professionals will help you get the project started, bringing you one step closer to building a house.
Follow these eight key steps to building a house and ensure the process is done correctly:
Step #1: Prepare to build a house
All great projects require a ton of time for preparation, which is the first essential step to building a house. To begin with, you’ll need to make sure that the land is cleared for all work to be conducted. Make sure that all relevant parties, such as electricians and other workers, are present as well.
A roll-off dumpster will need to be on-site as well, so that all disposable materials can be taken care of. To make things easier on your end, a detailed blueprint can aid in making sure all things are in working order. You will eventually have to discuss this with contractors, and subcontractors, depending on the home’s needs.
Step #2: Build the house foundation
All homes in existence are built on top of a specific foundation. When building your own home, this comes in the form of excavation, followed by the installation. You’ll need to make sure the relevant contractors are present to do this part, such as putting in the correct slabs. Other specialists may also be required as well; this is a large component of your home after all!
Contractors will first dig into the ground, in order to make the trenches deep enough. Concrete should then be poured into the trenches, to which footing drains will be constructed. Soon enough, the foundation is waterproofed, so that they aren’t vulnerable to external factors.
Step #3: House plumbing & electrical
As mentioned previously, building a home by yourself is a not a one-person job. The right contractors, and other relevant parties, will need to be present to construct the property. Some of the most important professionals to have in this light include plumbers and electricians. The former will begin to work on installing the right pipes.
Pipes will usually be laid down in the correct areas by plumbers, depending on how the house is built. Down the line, these pipes will then be covered up. Electricians, on the other hand, will work on metal conduits for electricity to run though. Depending on the type of slab used previously, the conduits will be aligned accordingly.
Step #4: Framing of the house
Excavation is probably the second most important part of building a house. Once that is taken care of, you’ll have to turn your attention to framing. Carpenters will have to take care of most of this work, as they will begin working on the house’s sides and roof. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be as laborious as excavation.
Framing needs to be done in good weather, as inclement conditions can impede on the process. Once the major parts of framing are done, installing the windows, doors, and skylights will have to be done. If you prefer, this part can also be done by yourself or the carpentry crew on-site.
Step #5: House interior components
The external parts of your home have to do with framing. Once that has been completed, the next step involves putting the interior components together. These sections will mainly have to do with electrical and plumbing. However, it will, most of the time, also include insulation.
Your electrician and plumber should also be able to get the correct electrical circuits working as well. Insulation should also be installed in the walls, in addition to the attic if applicable. If you are unsure, always get an inspector to check the quality of the work.
Step #6: House drywall installation
The interior of your new home should also include drywall, which is hung throughout the property. The interior walls and ceiling have to be primed, before taping and installing the drywall too.
Step #7: House painting
The interior of your home should be coming along quite nicely at this point. Once all of your fixtures have been installed, it is now time to get a bit messy. Don’t forget to follow all the right steps for painting your surfaces!
Step #8: House flooring
Depending on how well-versed you are at this point in the procedure, flooring will be the last component to worry about. Make sure you choose a correct type of flooring, such as hardwood or laminate. All of these choices can impact the quality of the home’s interior overall!
